Title Contenders

Bayern Munich

After claiming their seventh successive league title last season, Bayern Munich are favourites to make it eight on the trot this campaign. It took them until the final day to claim the title last season and it might be just as hard this time, after saying goodbye to legends Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery. Over the summer they have brought in World Cup winning French duo Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard to strengthen their defence and add to their already impressive squad. If their tasty front three of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman are anywhere near their best, they’ll make eight in a row!

Key signing/s: L. Hernandez (A Madrid), B. Pavard (Stuttgart)

Key loss/es: M. Hummels (Dortmund), Rafinha (Flamengo)

First 5 games: Hertha Berlin (H), Schalke (A), Mainz (H), RP Leipzig (A), Cologne (H)

Predicted Finish & Title Odds: 1st - 1.25

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund’s infamous ‘Yellow Wall’.

Borussia Dortmund’s infamous ‘Yellow Wall’.

Dortmund’s 18/19 campaign ended with the old adage of ‘what could’ve been’. After leading Bayern by nine league points at one time during the season, they eventually finished behind in second place. They can draw great optimism from last season heading into a new campaign but they’ll need surprise packet Jaden Sancho to fire again. They’ve done some clever work during the window, replacing Christian Pulisic and Abdou Diallo with a plethora of talent in Julian Brandt, Nico Schulz, Thorgan Hazard and the returning Mats Hummels. There’s renewed confidence at BVB, but it will take one hell of a season to topple Munich!

Key signing/s: F. Alcacer (Barcelona), N. Schulz (Hoffenheim), M. Hummels (Munich), J. Brandt (Leverkusen), T. Hazard (Monchengladbach)

Key loss/es: M. Philipp (Moscow), C. Pulisic (Chelsea), A. Diallo (PSG)

First 5 games: Augsburg (H), Cologne (A), Union Berlin (A), Leverkusen (H), Frankfurt (A)

Predicted Finish & Title Odds: 2nd - 5.50

RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim & B Monchengladbach

After a third place finish last year, RB Leipzig are slowly becoming a real threat to Bayern Munich and Dortmund, who’ve had a stranglehold on the Bundesliga in recent times. Leipzig have some serious young talent on their hands with German international striker Timo Werner and centre back Dayot Upamecano, don’t be surprised if they end up in a battle for second place. Bayer Leverkusen are another side to look out for in the Bundesliga race. Manager Peter Bosv took over Leverkusen mid-way through last season, taking them from ninth place to fourth. With a full pre-season under their belts, trophies are well within their sites this season.

The 2019/20 season brings new beginnings for Hoffenheim with a new coach and some fresh faces in the squad. Without any European football this season, a refreshed Hoffenheim could do some serious damage with the likes of Ishak Belfodil and Andrej Kramaric in their holster. The final top four hopeful in the Bundesliga is Borussia Monchengladbach after missing out on Champions League football by a whisker last season. Their failings brought on the appointment of two-time Austrian league winner Marco Rose as manager, who will be looking to get the best out of players such as Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo. This year’s race for the Bundesliga top four could be one hell of a battle!

Paderborn, Union Berlin, Augsburg, Cologne & SC Freiburg

After being promoted to the top division this season, Paderborn and Union Berlin are strong favourites to head back down. Even star signing for Union Berlin, 30-year-old Neven Subotic, said “survival will perhaps be the toughest job of my career.” Outside of the favourites, Augsburg, Cologne and SC Freiburg are all in a bit of trouble too. Augsburg only survived a relegation playoff by four points last season and could be one of the sides to drop considering their shaky defence.
